Beautifully Imperfect: A Look Inside Our “Seconds” – Discounted Tile

Every tile we make at Wet Dog Tile Co. starts the same way: a lump of clay, a lot of patience, and a design pulled from nature. Most pieces come out of the kiln exactly as we hoped, but every so often, the powers that be have other plans. A glaze runs a little further than expected, a bubble forms where we wanted a smooth surface, or a small imperfection in the clay body shines through the glaze. These are the pieces that land in our “Seconds” section, and while they don’t meet our usual standards for our main collections, we think they deserve just as much love. Here’s a closer look at a few of the one-of-a-kind pieces currently waiting for a home.

Our Large Dolphin captures everything we love about the Ocean Dog Tile Collection: movement, playfulness, and a bit of coastal magic. This particular piece experienced a glaze misfire in the kiln, leaving a slight imperfection near the top fin. It’s a small flaw on an otherwise striking tile, one that would look right at home accenting a bathroom wall or adding motion to a kitchen backsplash in any ocean-themed space.

Gentle, rounded, and endlessly calming, our Large Manatee tile is a favorite for anyone drawn to the quieter side of the sea. On this piece, the glaze was applied a touch too thick, giving it a deeper, more saturated finish than we originally intended. The result is a manatee with even more presence than usual, perfect for grounding a bathroom wall or drifting through a larger ocean mosaic.

Not every piece in our Seconds section has a physical flaw. Our Zessi Fairy tile was created as a test piece while we were developing a new glaze combination for the Lake, Pond & River Dog Tile Collection. That means it carries a slightly more experimental character than our standard production pieces, and it’s genuinely one of a kind, since the exact glaze test that shaped it will never be repeated. It’s a lovely fit for a nursery, reading nook, or any space that could use a touch of woodland whimsy.

Few tiles make a statement quite like our Large Lobster. It’s vibrant color make it an instant focal point in any kitchen or coastal-themed room. This particular piece was glazed a bit too thick, giving it a deeper, richer red than we originally intended. The result is a lobster with even more presence than usual, ready to claim its spot on a backsplash or gallery wall.

Quiet, watchful, and full of character, our Shore Birds set brings a bit of early morning stillness to any coastal collection. This pair experienced a glaze misfire during firing, so each bird carries its own slight variation in finish. Together, they make a lovely addition to a mudroom, porch, or scattered across a larger beach-themed mosaic.

Sea grass may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you picture ocean art, but our Seaweed tiles have quietly become some of our favorites to make. This particular piece developed a slight imperfection in the clay during shaping, a small irregularity that gives it a bit of extra character. It retains all the flowing, textured detail that makes this design so satisfying to look at up close.

Seconds – Friends with Minor Flaws

We could quietly toss these pieces aside, but that’s never felt right to us. Each one still took the same hours of shaping, glazing, and firing as its flawless counterparts. The only difference is a small mark that makes it truly unrepeatable. If you’re drawn to the idea of owning a piece with a little story built into it, and you don’t mind a slight imperfection, our Seconds section is worth a browse. Just keep in mind that these pieces are final sale, no returns, since each one is sold exactly as it came out of the kiln.
